Project Description

Background

Nowadays, many new Australians often struggle to integrate into their community life in the years after becoming citizens. Over the past 30 years, the opportunities for practical civic education have largely ended after school years, leaving many Australians with limited opportunities to gain practical civic knowledge.

Description

Connecting New Citizens to Australian Democracy

AUnity Homepage by Nicolyn and Bassam

AUnity is designed as a friendly guide for newcomers and Australians. The website provides useful information about Australia, helps connect with the community, and learn about values, history, and daily life. A key feature is language selection, allowing users to choose their preferred language to make information easier to understand. Once on the website, users are encouraged to explore a variety of topics through AI Chat Boxes or trusted sources of information.

Our Approach

Our approach is to design a user-friendly and accessible website, incorporating AI chat boxes, reliable information sources, and a built-in page translator. The goal is to create a space where users feel informed and connected to their community. This platform can help Australians improve their civic rights, understand their community responsibilities, and get involved in local events and decision-making.

Use cases

Newcomer to Australia Engaging with their community
A newcomer to Australia accesses the website to learn more about the local organisations, connect with others, and reach out to their community.

None-English Speaker wants to know more about Australia and how Australian democracy works
Users who cannot read English fluently can use the built-in language translator and AI Chat Box to explore how Australian democracy works in their own language, helping them gain confidence and understanding.

Newcomer to Australia want to get involved in local events or discover volunteer opportunities
Users can access blogs and information pages about local activities, community programs, and volunteering opportunities, helping Australians actively engage in their communities.

Australian want to grow their understanding of civic rights and responsibilities
User can use this website to learn about their rights and responsibilities through the AI Chat Box or information page.

Australian looking for an opportunity to join a community program
The website offers additional opportunities for volunteering, community decision-making, and civic engagement, making it easier for residents to get involved and contribute.

Future Plan

In the future, we hope to introduce more options for users to interact with our website by integrating automatic blogging systems, links directing to community hubs, location-based local events, and volunteering opportunities to give back to communities.

Data Story

Our datasets were ethically web-scraped from the provided datasets and fed into an OpenAI LLM as a CSV file, which shapes the way the OpenAI API responds. Additional links were used in the explore tab to direct users towards reliable government sources.

Please note that our Github Repository has been flagged as we accidently set a repo to public when a api key was present so we have uploaded all files and commit history evidence to a Google Drive linked below. Thank you so much
