Project Description

I have made a tool that generates maps which rate locations in Australia for suitability for building a datacentre. It currently considers proximity to power stations, proximity to international undersea cables, and (in victoria) suitability of the land's planning zone. One recommended location is south west of Melbourne because of the proximity to the "Sydney-Melbourne-Adelaide-Perth" cable, and the absence of residential or conservation land.

Data Story

I used the Digital Atlas Australia for locations of major power stations. This has the location, the megawatts, and type of Power generation.

I used the Vicmap Planning portal for zoning data in Victoria. Conservation zones and residential zones were used to exclude areas for consideration.

I used TeleGeography's Submarine Cables Data for locations of terminals in Australia. These locations are used as a proxy for nearness to overseas users and businesses.
