Project Description

The increasing population of saltwater crocodiles poses a significant danger to residents and tourists at Northern Territory. Moreover, there are limited data collection strategies on crocodile sightings present at Northern Territory, which makes it difficult to predict encounters and create better and accurate analytics. There is a need for a real-time solution to monitor crocodile activity and provide timely alerts to the public for ensuring public safety.

We explore the possible solutions to increase public safety against crocodile attacks. We explore a solution of creating an Mobile application to provide live data on crocodile activities and sightings, which can be used by the people of NT community. Moreover, an IoT system is proposed with an Web application to monitor live crocodile activity across Northern Territory.

Data Story

This project conducted data analysis based on two datasets available at Northern Territory Open Data sets (https://data.nt.gov.au/), which are NT Capture Zones and Daily count (https://data.nt.gov.au/dataset/nt-crocodile-capture-zones-and-daily-count) and Crocodile Monitoring Survey of 2021-2022 (https://data.nt.gov.au/dataset/crocodile-monitoring-survey) Moreover,

Crocodile Monitoring Survey 2021-2022

Description of Use We used this dataset to create heatmap of Crocodile and cross validate/run a correlation analysis against the temperature as well as water level in areas with high heat.

Data Set

NT Crocodile Capture Zones and Daily Count

Description of Use Our team used this dataset to look at Crocodile sightings from 2008 to 2023 and deduce seasonal patterns as well as develop heat maps of crocodile sightings.
