Project Description

Data Centre Frontier is a planning platform meant to make the choice of where your next data centre is going a simple and defensible decision by using open data.

Data Centre Frontier uses data from the Digital Atlas of Australia, Geoscience Australia and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. To calculate the best place to build your data centre.

Using the ArcGIS map data, Data Centre Frontier layers data collected over the map and displays it to make selecting your next data centre location an easy choice.
By then drawing on the map, Data Centre frontiers can give you a location viability score. So that you may compare locations and decide which is the best place for you.

In the future, we hope to include many more datasets, the ability to change score weight, save location and of course, having the platform work for all of Australia.

Data Story

The idea behind Data Centre Frontiers was to create and platform that could connect and read many different map layer data so users could draw and place their data centres on this one map and discover if it was a viable location for a data centre.

Team DataSets

Geoscience Australia. (2024). National Electricity Infrastructure — Transmission Lines

Description of Use Used to retrieve and show transmission lines in Data Centre Frontier - Tas (Open Data), and once imported, used to then make the calculations from the proposed data centre site to the transmission line and decide on one of the grid sub scores.

Data Set

Collaborative Australian Protected Areas Database (CAPAD) 2024 — Terrestrial

Description of Use Used to calculate to retrieve, and display the protected area in the Data Centre Frontier - TAS (Open Data) prototype. Then used to calculate how much of the polygon is in a protected area and calculate the sub score from that.

Data Set

Australian Hydrological Geospatial Fabric - Water Bodies

Description of Use Used to calculate to retrieve, and display the water storage in the Data Centre Frontier - TAS (Open Data) prototype. Then the data is used as a part of the water subscore calculation.

Data Set

Geoscience Australia. (2024) National Electricity Infrastructure — Transmission Substations

Description of Use Used to retrieve and show transmission substations in Data Centre Frontier - Tas (Open Data), and once imported, used to then make the calculations from the proposed data centre site to the transmission substation and decide on the grid sub score.
