Project Description

We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the lands on which this project was developed - the Larrakia people as the Traditional Owners of the Darwin region. We pay our respects to the Larrakia elders past and present.

The Northern Territory has an unparalleled, precious and biodiversity ecosystems with a total area of 1,419,630 km2 combining land and water making it the 11th-largest country subdivision in the world.

To keep an accurate registry of Northern Territory fauna is pivotal to maintain our rich biodiversity healthy. The availability to access open data sets is an excellent opportunity to achieve this goal.

Data Story

NT Fauna Atlas data set is a comprehensive database of all known vertebrate fauna records, including mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, as well threatened invertebrates, for the Northern Territory.

We can approach the use of open data set in two ways.

  1. Engage students to work with NT Fauna Atlas data set challenging them to analyse data that will reveal relevant facts as i.e. species Endangered.
  2. Engage youth students at school or at a community level to participate in fauna surveys. This will involve students to know better their surroundings and be mindful about the rich biodiversity and the important role that plays to protect our environment for future generations.
