The Green Team
The Green Team are committed to creating a way for households to be a force for community change within their own backyards.
As residents, either homeowners or renters, there is an opportunity for us all to create change in our very own backyard. From planting local native endangered flora to supporting endangered fauna by contributing to nearby ecological corridors, this app allows everyday Queenslanders to easily play their part in saving our planet.
Register your property, plant some natives, support local flora and fauna, receive discounts, and become a part of the Green Team!
Australia is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna that are now facing a time of unprecedented change. Natural disasters are becoming more frequent and more intense and are largely driven by human-related activities.
We used datasets from the Moreton Bay Regional Council Data Hub, the Queensland Open Data Portal, and weather data from the Bureau of Meteorology. Python scripts were used to import, clean and analyse datasets. The python libraries utilised were Tkinter, Pandas, Matplotlib, Plotly, and urllib. This, along with ArcGIS mapping software, was used to create a working prototype interface. A python script was created that scraped live JSON response data from the BoM website, giving us real-time weather observations.
To represent the data visually, pie charts, bar graphs, scatter plots and image overlays were used. This enabled us to show the locations of endangered species, the diversity of those species and their distribution within regions. In future, this data could be used to identify the link between climate change and the decline of biodiversity of Australian native species. Methods such as overlaying heat maps with the changing distribution of species can further educate the community on the importance of protecting and enhancing the sustainability of Australia’s natural environment. This process begins in every user's very own backyard.
