Project Description

Our project aims to create platform that raises awareness and helps to promote and preserve the Aboriginal language. Through gamification we will create an indigenous language learning application known as “Indigi”, that allows for easy learning and understanding of various indigenous dialects.
Indigi features many functions aimed at creating an interactive and entertaining learning experience. The app allows the user to learn from over 90 indigenous languages, with features identifying the most commonly used and region spoken dialects based on geographical locations. The app supports users through their learning by utilizing common language learning techniques with categories based on basic words, phrases, plurals and other core topics such as animals and clothing. Each category is recorded to track their progress through each language. To further this, a trophy and reward system topped with ability to add and compete with friends, encourages the user to continue learning and developing their skills within a friendly competitive environment. Here we have an example of a basic question, displaying the animal and associated word. Once correctly selected, the app communicates the correct pronunciation. As the user progresses, the quiz questions increase in difficulty and require the user to recall previously learnt words and phrases.
There are various opportunities to promote user engagement both within the aboriginal and wider communities. Advertising with aboriginal owned and run businesses as well as community outreach programs such as Closing the Gap, will help raise awareness to aboriginal families looking to learn and preserve the indigenous dialects. Furthermore, the implementation within learning environments (like schools or alternative learning programs) should be considered. Through gamification, the app aims to engage the youth and provide an entertaining learning experience. Due to the interactive map feature, the app provides an opportunity within the tourism industry to educate users about the local dialects spoken for the respective travel destinations.
Our application can utilize community liaisons and experts within that language for further information on the datasets, this will help provide Jobs for elders and community members knowledgeable in their respective languages. By working with these indigenous communities we will ensure positive social impact.

Data Story

The Primary data used for this project will be sourced through the State Library of Queensland. These data sets include a large variety of Indigenous dialects. Although some of these data sets are currently limited, we hope that by working with community liasons and experts of each particular dialect. We can ensure that each language has as much data as the next.

Team DataSets

Indigenous and Overseas Born Profile - 2011 Census

Description of Use This data set shows a clear discrepancy between the average unemployment and the indigenous unemployment of different areas. Our Indigenous language learning App will provide an open job market for Indigenous elders and community members with knowledge of their respective culture.

Data Set

Australia’s Future Employment

Choose one of the following questions to address: 1. How can recent and future changes in the labour market help prepare young people for job opportunities? 2. What can we learn from case studies of regional labour markets? For example, what does rapid change in the industries or occupations within a region tell us about the needs of employers/workers in other regional labour markets

🌟 Unearth references to Indigenous agricultural practises by searching archival records

There is increasing interest in foods that were grown on this continent for millennia, awareness of Aboriginal farming practices, and the history they reveal about Australia pre-colonisation. This challenge is to search Trove for descriptions of land care, cropping, harvesting and food storage, to add to the bank of knowledge of Aboriginal farming.

Helping a social impact ‘start up’ (small organisation) to tell their story

Small and informal community/interest groups who have formed to solve local problems need data to know if their activities are making a difference and to re-design programs. How can we help these groups tell their story through data so they can seek support (political, financial, and on the ground) by showing how their programs are working, and decide where to focus next?
