Project Description

How might we connect schools and students with their local community for learning life skills and for post school opportunities?

In exploring the available data, it was found that there is insufficient information that describes what a "Life Skill" is, and insufficient data about how these undefined life skills are being measured, and therefore, insufficient data to determine if these "life skills" are being achieved.

As a team of Scout Leaders, we know anecdotally that there are areas of the community that provide life skill experiences - these include organisations, associations, businesses, and community assistance program providers. However, the needs that these organisations address are ill measured and therefore it's difficult to measure the success of their efforts.

Further, there exists a plethora of community relationship tools that bridge the gap between schools and community organisations, be they council-sponsored community relationship portals, community program groups, or early intervention programs to support those who may not be achieving success. However, without appropriate data to review the success of these measures, development of a utility to solve an undefined problem remains futile.

If we were given access to de-identified student data that included attendance, academic results, subject selection, welfare information as well as these student's post-school outcomes we believe there would be opportunities to identify trends that could be used in early interventions to prevent students from falling through the gaps. Unfortunately this data is currently not open and therefore unavailable for use in this challenge.
