Project Description
MateHub is a simple but powerful solution that uses local events to strengthen social cohesion in Australia.
It connects people from different cultural backgrounds through sports, festivals, and community activities—offering discounts for multicultural groups and rewarding participation with digital trophies.
By combining AI-driven interaction, post-event feedback, and government datasets, MateHub helps councils and communities measure inclusivity, build trust, and celebrate diversity.
Data Story
Australia is one of the most multicultural nations in the world, but reports from the Scanlon Institute and the ABS show that belonging and trust are in decline. Councils run thousands of events every year, yet they don’t always know how inclusive these are or how to bring people from different backgrounds together.
MateHub addresses this by:
• Using Scanlon Mapping Social Cohesion 2024 as a baseline to highlight the challenge.
• Integrating demographic insights from the ABS Permanent Migrants in Australia, 2021 dataset to simulate diversity.
• Applying the SAcommunity Thesaurus to classify and tag events consistently across categories (sports, culture, GLAM, civic).
Together, these datasets justify the need for MateHub and power its features:
• Discounts based on diversity (up to 25% for highly multicultural groups).
• Feedback surveys after events to generate a live Cohesion Index using the Shannon Diversity Index.
• Insights for councils on how inclusive their initiatives really are.
This transforms qualitative data into a practical, measurable tool for strengthening social connections.
