The Puzzling Ducks
Mental Health Journey is a tool for someone to get relevant information on mental health challenges that people in their demographic are facing. Our theory that someone suffering realises they are not alone, they will be more likely to seek help.
The tool offers information to the user in three categories: what can I do to better support myself, what can I do to better support my loved ones, and what can I do better support the mental health system in New Zealand.
We have collated a range of data sets to get the most relevant information for the user. These include:
- the % of people in their demographic who are experience mental distress per year, and in their lifetime
- the % of people who are suffering from hazardous drinking
- the number of people who commit suicide (per 100,000 in that demographic)
- and the number of face-to-face addiction and mental health conversations that have occurred each year
With this data we were able to identify a few key at risk groups, which we would have put given a more targeted focus on if there was more time to develop the tool. These groups were:
- young men having a high risk of hazardous drinking
- people over 60 who have less professional face-to-face conversations about mental health and addiction
- Māori men who are at a higher risk of suicide
Description of Use Where we originally found information on face to face visits, which then lead us to the original resource
Description of Use Where we originally found the information on Suicide Rates in NZ which lead us to the original resource.
Description of Use We used this resource to display information to the user on how many people had been seen someone face to face about mental health or addiction.
Description of Use Used to get information on suicides which is displayed to the user on the results screen.
Description of Use Used as an example of an organisation which is worth looking into. Sampled their points on which mental health issues need more attention.
Description of Use Getting a more personal look at how mental health effects people. Reading through it we extracted a few values such as the percentage of New Zealanders experiencing mental distress in their lifetime. It has also been linked to from our site for any users looking for more information.
Description of Use We used this data set to get information on hazardous drinking, and mental distress rates based on demographics.
