Project Description

PlaySmart is a Youth Gambling Risk Dashboard that helps adolescents visualise the true cost of gambling-like activities. By converting weekly gambling expenditure into tangible alternatives (like trips or gaming consoles), the tool makes abstract financial impacts concrete and relatable. The dashboard also connects users directly to support services, helping young people like Liam make informed decisions about their spending before gambling behaviours become problematic.

Data Story

PlaySmart uses recent Australian research and datasets to highlight and address youth gambling risks in video games. We drew on the AGRC literature review, ACT's young adult gambling report, and Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation resources (factsheet, student survey). These sources provided key statistics such as the prevalence of loot box use, typical youth spending, and links to gambling harm which we translated into relatable spending visualisations and educational content within our dashboard. Our demo video shows how these data-driven insights inform the user experience and support early intervention.
