Project Description

What is Taxify?
Taxify is an intelligent tax optimisation tool that helps individuals make confident, data‑driven decisions about deductions, super contributions, and private health insurance. It brings together ATO guidance, official statistics, and a transparent optimisation engine to deliver clear, personalised recommendations that users can use immediately.

Why use Taxify?
Taxify reduces confusion and saves time by translating complex tax rules into practical steps. It shows exactly where savings are likely, explains why they matter, and links directly to authoritative ATO resources. This means fewer missed opportunities and a smoother, more informed experience without sharing personal data outside your device.

Why do you need Taxify?
Most taxpayers face similar questions every year: What deductions apply to me? Should I take switch to private health care to avoid MLS? How much salary should I sacrifice into super? Taxify answers these questions with clarity and evidence. It evaluates trade‑offs, compares outcomes, and highlights options that align with the user’s profile, income, and family circumstances, helping them make decisions they can trust.

How does Taxify work?
After users enter their income, postcode, and circumstances, Taxify analyses their inputs alongside ATO statistical data. It runs a piecewise linear optimisation that explores salary sacrifice amounts and private health insurance choices, then presents tailored recommendations with estimated savings. Each recommendation includes next steps, documentation to gather, and a direct link to relevant ATO guidance. Together, these elements ensure that Taxify remains simple, transparent, and empowering to Australian taxpayers.

Data Story

For this project, I sourced factual and statistical inputs from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to ensure reliability and accuracy. By grounding Taxify in official government data, I was able to confidently provide accurate results that are both consistent and trustworthy. This commitment to using authoritative resources enhances the credibility of Taxify's findings and strengthens the overall integrity of my work. Additionally, Canva was used to gather illustrations and showcase the pitch video, ensuring the visual narrative complemented the evidence-based approach of the project.

Team DataSets

Individual Income Tax Return Data (#1)

Description of Use For my project, I utilised this dataset to incorporate information about average income per postcode in the user's area for comparison within Taxify. The program reads the Excel file, isolates rows labeled "Taxable," and calculates the average by dividing the total taxable income by the number of taxpayers for each postcode. Presenting this local benchmark helps users understand their financial position and enables clearer, data-driven recommendations without sharing any personal information externally. This approach enhances user confidence by combining optimisation with transparent insights sourced from the ATO, which are easy to interpret within the interface.

ATOtv

Description of Use In my project, I integrated ATO TV as a valuable resource to guide users toward helpful information after they input their data inside Taxify and receive tailored recommendations for optimising their taxes. ATO TV’s educational format not only teaches complex concepts in an engaging manner, but also avoids collecting user data, which aligns seamlessly with the principles embedded in Taxify’s narrative and user help experience. By incorporating ATO TV, I aimed to provide users with authoritative and approachable guidance that enhances their understanding of tax-related issues. This approach significantly reduces the cognitive burden for those preparing their taxes independently, as it pairs our optimisation suggestions with reliable explanations from the ATO. This would result in an experience where users can trust that they are receiving well-rounded, comprehensible support while navigating their tax responsibilities.
