Smart Mobility: Optimizing Urban Infrastructure for a Sustainable Future
Jurisdiction: Victoria
#Designing sustainable urban mobility solutions
How might we use data insights to promote the development of sustainable urban infrastructure and reduce dependency on private vehicles?
Participants are tasked with designing data-driven solutions that address the correlation between;
- vehicle registration
- public transport usage
- and the availability of bike infrastructure in urban areas.
The goal is to propose actionable insights and policy recommendations that;
- promote sustainable transportation
- reduce carbon emissions
- and enhance active transport infrastructure.
These goals align with the Victorian Government’s commitments under the transport sector emissions reduction pledge.
Options include:
Analyse Data Correlations: Explore datasets related to;
- vehicle registrations
- public transport usage
- bike infrastructure availability
- and other relevant factors (e.g., population density, traffic patterns, air quality).
Identify Key Insights: Determine the relationship between the availability of active transport infrastructure (like bike lanes) and the use of sustainable transportation options (public transport and cycling) compared to private vehicle use.
Propose Solutions: Develop innovative strategies for urban planners and policymakers to;
- Improve active transport infrastructure
- reduce reliance on private vehicles
- and promote public transport and cycling.
Solutions can include policy recommendations, data visualizations, apps, or decision-making tools.
Simulate Impact: Use predictive modelling to demonstrate the potential impact of proposed changes on;
- urban mobility
- congestion
- carbon emissions
- and public health.
Improved urban infrastructure can encourage citizens to choose active transport or public transport over private vehicles. This could help improve the health of Victorians and reduce our emissions.
