Predicting roads closure affected by floods and bushfires
The problem we were looking to solve was the supply chain disruption caused by weather events such as flooding and fires. This can impact trucks, cyclists, and other vehicles regardless of whether you are in NSW or Hobart.
Our project can be used to plan trips of freight transport nationally across Australia. Users are able to determine the safest route (accounting for likelihood for flooding or fires), and are provided the estimated time which the route will take. Additionally, the routes will account for the safety of the driver in other ways, including exclusive use of approved routes for heavy vehicles, and mapping out rest stops along the way, meeting guidelines for truck driver working hours by ensuring they are able to take breaks along the way.
Following the increased climate-related disasters within NSW, such as the intense 2020 bushfires and this year’s summer floods, we were inspired to address the issues these mounting issues could pose upon our supply lines. In order to tackle this issue, we examined data from the National Freight Data Hub- relatively new data sets that launched only in June 2022, which show us the route names, locations, time, and speed. This data allowed us to plan routes easily which were functional, safe, and adhered to guidelines regarding freight transport across the country
